Testimonials

We first experienced Acorn at the AI Hackathon in June 2017, (via a google search), and joining Acorn has ultimately eliminated our one risk - a huge relief for me. Kiran has been in contact with people from Deep Mind, KCL and Hanson Robotics through Acorn, not to mention getting great exposure to design thinking, Agile, visits to companies across London.  Elena is an incredible catalyst for truly excellent experiences and her intentions are genuinely focused for the child's benefit, something that sadly missing from the outcomes of government ideals.

Arun Patel, Dad

The atmosphere was buzzing, the young people involved were absolutely engaged and took their tasks, and learning the skills needed to achieve them, very seriously. More than that though, the levels of sharing and communication with people who, in many cases, they had just met was incredible. I think it is this that really touched me most, to say nothing of the actual products that the teams came up with, which were also most impressive.

This has been a life changing event! I enjoyed learning about different types of jobs out there, such as a developer or UX designer. I also enjoyed learning about different market research methods and most importantly, my team I were solving a problem with refugees & met with mentors from the UN. I wish school was like a hackathon!

FAQ

What is Acorn Aspirations?

Acorn Aspirations is a social impact company, which aims to inspire young people aged 11-19 into the world of technology and entrepreneurship.

We are on a mission to bridge the digital skills gap and nurture the next generation of digital talent to fill the jobs required by the tech industry.

What is TeensInAI?

Teens In AI is Acorn Aspirations special initiative and was launched at the UN #AIforGood Summit on May 2018. It exists to increase diversity and inclusion in artificial intelligence. In June 2018, Teens In AI were part of EU AI Stakeholder Summit to help shape policy on EU AI Strategy.

We aim to democratise AI and create opportunities for underrepresented communities through a combination of expert mentoring, talks,workshops,hack-

athons, accelerators, company tours and networking opportunities that give young people aged 12-18 early exposure to AI for social good.

Our vision is for AI to be developed by a diverse group of thinkers and doers advancing AI for  humanity’s benefit.

What will I be learning?

Our curriculum is designed to give teenagers the chance to utilise AI and Machine Learning techniques to tackle global challenges in a holistic manner giving an understanding of design thinking, strategy and business model development, ethics, social responsibility and pitching skills. This year we will be exploring the following:

1. Human-Centred Design

2. AI Ethics

3. Machine Learning Tools: Python, Tensorflow, Keras, Jupyter Notebook, OpenAI gym and more

4. Field trips to BBC, Microsoft, Roborace and more

5. Expert talks

6. Workshops in Scrum; Pitching skills; Business Models and more

How much does it cost?

It costs £2000 to attend 10 days, however the Early Bird price is £1600, which ends 16 July.

We will never turn a child away, so if you are eager to join, but cannot afford the fees please contact Elena with subject "AI Accelerator Scholarship" on elena.sinel@acornaspirations.co.uk. Means tested scholarships are available.

This event looks amazing! How can I sponsor?

As a non-profit, we welcome those who, like us, wish to have an impact on the Tech world of tomorrow!

Your sponsorship will help and inspire a state school child (on free meals) to be the AI technologists, entrepreneurs and leaders of tomorrow.

We offer individuals and companies an opportunity to Sponsor-a-Child in the form of a full or partial Scholarship, ie. "The Joe Bloggs Scholarship for Under-13s".

Contact for sponsorship enquiries:

elena.sinel@acornaspirations.co.uk

Do I need to bring a laptop?

We do not provide laptops, so please bring your own.

For more info please contact Arun arun@acornaspirations.co.uk

Where will it take place?

All events take place in Central London. IIncluding BBC and Microsoft offices.

Do I need to know how to code?

If you are a beginner in Python, that's great!

Do not worry - we will teach you all the essentials. Trust your mentors - they will guide you through the entire process!

What jobs are there for AI researchers?

AI researchers are needed in EVERY industry and to give you an example of what they earn, take a look at this piece in New York Times.

"OpenAI paid its top researcher, Ilya Sutskever, more than $1.9 million in 2016. It paid another leading researcher, Ian Goodfellow, more than $800,000 — even though he was not hired until March of that year. Both were recruited from Google."

I love the sound of this event, but I am away in August. Could I just join for one week?

Unfortunately not! However, we run many other events during the course of the year!
